Tom Schmitz — Search Strategist

About Full Stack AI SEO

Hi, I'm Tom

Hi, I’m Thomas Schmitz. I’m a search strategist based in Seattle, and I’ve been helping people and organizations get found on the web since the late 1990s.

Over the last two decades, I’ve built and led search programs at every scale: from scrappy non-profits and agency client rooms to enterprise consulting, and ultimately leading in-house organic search for some of the largest global product launches and digital commerce platforms in technology.

I’ve guided teams through migrations spanning hundreds of global markets, stood up search operations from near-zero, authored technical requirements alongside software engineers, and mentored writers and marketers on how search actually works.

Today, search is undergoing its most significant structural shift since the invention of the web crawler. Language models, synthesized answer engines, and autonomous browsing agents are fundamentally redefining discovery.

I built Full Stack AI SEO to document what works when the rules change.

The philosophy: engineering over speculation

A lot of what gets published about “AI SEO” falls into two traps: breathless panic about the death of search, or hand-waving speculation dressed up as definitive answers.

My perspective comes from the implementation layer. If you’ve lived through the shifts from directories to PageRank, from desktop to mobile-first indexing, and from ten blue links to structured knowledge graphs, you realize that the fundamentals that survive every disruption are consistent:

  1. Crawl access & machine readability — Can a robot fetch, parse, and render your content without hitting technical walls?
  2. Explicit structure & semantic clarity — Is your data unambiguously structured so a machine doesn’t have to guess?
  3. Entity identity & verifiable authority — Can readers and systems distinguish the entity, and is there appropriate independent evidence for its claims?
  4. Human editorial substance — Does the page provide genuine insight and original value, or is it synthetic filler?
  5. Rigorous, interpretable measurement — Can you trace real business impact rather than vanity impressions?
  6. Continuous auditing & rapid correction — When models hallucinate or misrepresent your brand, can you preserve the evidence, investigate the cause, correct sources you control, and recheck the answer?

These six disciplines form the core architecture of this site.

Why this site exists

Search strategy is easy to preach in a slide deck. The hard part is getting engineering tickets prioritized, authoring precise markup schemas, aligning cross-functional teams, and verifying that what shipped actually moved the needle.

Full Stack AI SEO is an independent practitioner’s workbench:

  • Actionable playbooks and workflows designed for working SEOs, engineers, and digital marketing leaders.
  • Copyable templates, code snippets, and structured data schemas you can adapt, validate, and test before production use.
  • Auditing frameworks based on platform documentation, with procedures for collecting server logs and observed answers. Worked examples are labeled as fictional; they are not published performance results.
  • No gated content, no artificial urgency, and no hype. Everything is free to read, inspect, and put to work.

Choose a starting point

The topic introduction provides a framework for reviewing technical access, structured facts, organizational identity, editorial quality, measurement, and corrections. Each topic explains the area and offers a first action. Use Where to start to diagnose a specific problem or browse resources by task for a guide, procedure, checklist, or working template.

Start with the problem you need to solve. The six areas connect, but you do not need to follow a fixed course.

Independence & ethics

This site is an independent educational publication. The perspectives, analyses, and frameworks shared here represent my own thinking as an independent practitioner, not those of my employer or past clients.

When official documentation or crawler behavior changes, I update the guides. When an observation turns out to be incomplete or wrong, I correct it in the open. Source links show the basis for material claims; platform documentation, editorial recommendations, and observed results remain clearly distinguished.
